I’m Pregnant and I’m Farming

June 29, 2018

29 Jun

Well I have failed miserably at my goal of getting back to writing regularly here on the blog! But I do have a good excuse, or at least a reasonable distraction!

This is my latest post for the Hoard’s Dairyman Blog – HD Notebook

I’m one to say that men and women’s role on the dairy farm can be equal. And yet, the differences between genders farming together become very apparent to me in the task of raising a farm family. This is especially apparent to me during the 9 months before that next generation joins the farm. Pregnancy is always a reminder to me that there is great power as well as limits to being a female farmer.

However, a fit and healthy pregnancy can go hand in hand with your role on the farm. As long as you are following your doctor’s orders and there are no complications that warrant added concern, keeping up with your usual tasks throughout your pregnancy is doable. That being said, pregnancy does warrant some thought and possible adaptations. As I head into the last month of my third pregnancy, I have been keenly aware of this lately.

My number one advice for farming while pregnant is listen to your body!

I know we all think we can do it all, and often do, but listen to what feedback your body gives you. It might require a little change of pace or way of doing things. While that can be frustrating, don’t be too stubborn to ask for help when it’s needed!

I also know with our crazy schedules that the last ones to get taken care of is often ourselves. Keep healthy snacks handy, and keep yourself hydrated. I also think it’s important to keep a tab on your energy level. Don’t feel defeated when your body really does need a nap! Pregnancy is a job within itself, and it’s okay to admit that growing a baby is hard work.

I’m not going to lie; I struggled with how my role on the farm changed when I had my first child. I think we have this mental perception as female farmers that we can do it all and with a baby in tow. While children and farm life can go hand in hand, there is nothing wrong with admitting that mentally and often physically is makes our tasks more difficult.

As we’ve added more children to our family, I’ve become more comfortable in saying what I need to keep myself physically and mentally healthy through pregnancy and beyond. The truth is, we are different as women on the farm. I applaud each and every one of you out there who finds the ways to make it work. Don’t feel defeated to embrace that difference and do what works best for you! {Original post I’m Pregnant and I’m Farming can be found here}

Always the real reel here. Feels hard to compete w Always the real reel here. Feels hard to compete with ai when the real reel is often not picture perfect. But that’s life with all its messy bits and pieces. So it will always be my real words here and the Ladies of this messy beautiful life.
This right here, the beautiful things. That’s why This right here, the beautiful things. That’s why we’ve fought so hard to hold onto this way of life. I truly wish it didn’t have to be so hard. Farmers aren’t in this way of life to get rich, but we certainly hate struggling even to make ends come close to meeting for our families. Not going to lie I’ve held onto to some guilt that we had a way out and can see a future for our farm again. So many wonderful farm families don’t have that choice. Breathing in the beautiful, letting go of the past and looking forward to bringing you more of our farm story in this crazy world of social media.
I’ve been quiet in this space. Mostly cause I coul I’ve been quiet in this space. Mostly cause I couldn’t find the words to describe the literal disaster strong holding dairy farm families in the Pacific Northwest. It’s gut wrenchingly heartbreaking. We went through the tough conversations of how we survive as a dairy farm. Because this right here, these generations of dedication to a breed and land. We couldn’t let go of. Dairy farming is in my blood, heart and soul and there were no answers of what else to do. So we made a choice and are now 10 months into being a certified organic farm and selling our milk to @organicvalley As a small family farm we finally feel like our farm has a chance at real future again.
When you’ve had the warmest January ever on record When you’ve had the warmest January ever on record and the grass starts growing…you turn the milk cows out to pasture! Looking like this dry spell should hold and they’ll get to enjoy some days on grass in the sunshine. Now we just wait to see if Winter ever does decide to show up!
Goodbye November, thankful for so much this year. Goodbye November, thankful for so much this year. Especially sights like this 😍
Good morning, cows, sun and Friday! Some days just Good morning, cows, sun and Friday! Some days just dawn with so much beauty you can’t help but stop and appreciate. Find the beauty in today, it’s everywhere 💛

NAMING TIME!!! There’s a couple new faces on the farm and they are looking for names along with our group of Guernsey calves. These are Normande calves from Jersey crossbred dams. Since they are crossbred we picked the impossible letter of X. But my goodness they are the cutest. Fun to have something new! Reminder on how our naming works the first letter at least must match their mother’s name below. Give me your best suggestions for:AvaFlawless FrappuccinoJingerbread XadineKandykaneFrenzyXoie ...
